Statistics

IASP regularly collects statistics to monitor the state and existing trends in the area of innovation (AOI), innovation district (ID) and science and technology park (STP) industry throughout the world. A small selection of key figures from the IASP 2024 Global Survey is provided below, with the full report containing more than 120 charts and tables available from the Knowledge Room.

The chart shows the main technology sectors operating in AOIs/IDs/STPs. As in previous analysis, ICT continues to be the most predominant sector, with 47.6% of AOIs/IDs/STPs identifying it as their main technology sector. Biotechnology is the second most important sector (38.1%), closely followed by healthcare (35.7%), software engineering (33.3%) and artificial intelligence (30.2%). Compared to other editions5 of the IASP Global Survey, there is an important change: this year, the third most important sector is healthcare, leaving the energy sector out of the top five sectors.

The chart highlights key elements of AOIs/IDs/STPs that foster innovation and attract talent. Most (93.7%) have business incubators, and 81.7% feature accelerators to support startups, while 75.4% promote specialisation through clusters. Strong research involvement is evident, with 80.2% hosting research institutions and 73.8% collaborating with universities. Additionally, 72.2% offer leisure activities, 46.8% provide social services, and 41.3% include residential facilities. While city-based innovation spaces naturally integrate these elements, those in greenfield or peripheral areas require deliberate planning to incorporate them.
